Hello everyone,,

Gosh, what a fantastic start. Thanks Beat, for taking the initiative.

To get a taste of a different kind of cultural hackathon in Switzerland, Museomix will be happening at the Musee d'Art et d'Histoire in Geneva this November 7-8-9. I'm on the steering committee for this and would be happy to make introductions. There will be a general interest meeting on June 10th in Geneva, if anyone's interested. No one else on that team is familiar with openGLAM, and most are quite new to maker culture.

Looking forward to meeting you all on the 23rd!

All best,

Liz

Hannes

Sure, why not, I will at least go check it out - if it is good we can then at least help them spread the word.

Hi,

at a first sight this looks interesting... but where are the free
licensed content of the Musée d'art et d'histoire de Genève? I have
invested around 15 minutes and the only thing I can read is "all right
reserved".

Re: Fwd: [OpenGLAM CH WG] Apropos de Museomix...

Emmanuel Engelhart-4
In reply to this post by Estermann Beat
Hi Beat

Yes, obviously my misunderstanding: I thought we were talking about the
event itself.

After a small email exchange with the org, it seems that:
* For now: It's not clear which data will provided
* Data will be provided during the event but no platform will be setup
to make them available for everyone. That means that this is really
important that people make a full copy of the data to be able to
continue to deal with them post-hackathon.
* Although it's been announced that "Nous favorisons pour cela les
licences libres et ouvertes", it's probably worth to check this point
and do the necessary if content are not free licensed.

Really nice to see many people interested to go to the Apéromix and show
our interest to collaborate. I'm curious to read your feedbacks.

Emmanuel

Re: Fwd: [OpenGLAM CH WG] Apropos de Museomix...

Estermann Beat
Hi Emmanuel,

I don't think it would be extremely helpful to set up yet another platform to share the open datasets of the Muséomix event.

There has been some discussion on the international OpenGLAM-Mailing list lately about a central registry or platform for open cultural data collections.

Right now, information about open datasets and collections is assembled in various places; you'll find some of them on the following document if you scroll down: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Jnp4dX_jrlMZPvNEMRjE4UZsD9-ysbJaH8U3RJLDsak/edit

I guess there would be some interest in creating a global solution, so that every cultural data hackathon could share "their" datasets in one place, ideally along with references to the applications that have been developed for these datasets. Further information may include whether the collections are also available through Wikimedia Commons, Europeana, DPLA, or similar. - However, it seems that we are not quite there yet... but the best solution for now would probably be to use one of the existing platforms to share information about open collections in relation to a particular hackathon.

Cheers,
Beat

Addendum:

And of course the institution(s) providing the data/content should make them available on their website along with a robust rights statement; ideally CC-0 for the metadata, and CC-by or CC-by-sa or public domain mark for the content itself. This can be done in a simple and straightforward manner on an ordinary webpage with a link to a CSV-file with the metadata and a link to a ZIP-file containing all the content files.

Cheers,
Beat

Yes, I agree with you. But :
* The MAH has already a platform to publish online pictures of their
collections: http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/mah/collections/
* Not sharing them freely online *at all* means that people attending to
the hackathon might switch a little bit their focus from
"re-using/linking" to "gathering" (to work later on the data/to allow
other people to work on the data).

May we have please a short report about this? Do we have got an answer
to our most important questions (1) What are the content which will be
made available (2) Which license will be use?

Cheers

Re: Fwd: [OpenGLAM CH WG] Apropos de Museomix...

Stéphane Coillet-Matillon-2
Hi there,

I went last night with Gabriel to Museomix' presentation. In short, there is not much for us to do (or get) but we still should publicize their cool project.

Museomix, as it is, is closer to an artsy hackathon than anything - they do not work on contents as much as finding new ways to present them (see e.g. "Bruits de quartier", where they hacked an iPad to recognize locations on a model of the Roman town of Lyon and play voices to give it some life (conversations at the bathhouse, the slave market, etc.)).

These projects are apparently not really meant to survive the event itself (so much the better if they do, but it's not the point): it rather is meant to mix talents from different backgounds (historians, coders, graphic designers...) and take 72h to produce something fun to use in a museum setting. If any of you is interested, do check their website to register as a specialist - the only museomix this year in Switzerland will be in Geneva, but they have several others across the world, and all are open to everyone.

This being said, eventhough the event does not aim to produce content (and any licensing discussion with these guys was clearly irrelevant), the simple fact that they closely work with the GE department of culture made for good contacts with the administration. We'll work this out separately over the next few weeks.

Best regards,
Stephane

Re: Fwd: [OpenGLAM CH WG] Apropos de Museomix...

Emmanuel Engelhart-4
Hi Stéphane,

Thanks to you and Gabriel for having been there and for this feedback
full of explanations. Of course, this is disappointing that it's not
planned to release new content with a free license, although this is not
really a surprise.

From my point-of-view, inviting volunteers to work for a GLAM which
does not release something is... this is not so great. There is nothing
wrong to have fun together during a WE on cultural/IT topics, but this
is not really what we try to do at Wikimedia. We need IMO to be careful
to not be part of an "open-washing" operation.

That said:
* This is important to stay tuned and keep in touch with the MAH. We
might maybe do something together in the future.
* Although the web site has a bad term-of-use,
http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/mah/collections/ has many public
domain interesting pictures. I have for example uploaded and advert this
https://twitter.com/SwissWiR/status/475272737104330752. Multiplying this
type of reusing might be a positive example for the MAH.
* GLAMs are often interesting to present their data in an innovative and
flexible way (but always don't have the resources to do it). Wikimedia
has IMO a card to play here: proposing a middleware software allowing to
(1) use our projects as a backend (2) allow to customize the user
front-end. This might be a powerful tool to lever uploads on
commons/wikidata.

Regards
Emmanuel

Re: Fwd: [OpenGLAM CH WG] Apropos de Museomix...

Gabriel Thullen
In reply to this post by Stéphane Coillet-Matillon-2
I might add that the organizers are only interested in individuals, not in teams of like-minded people. Once every one has signed up ans pais their 65 francs, the organizers will make up the 8 person teams by mixing the participants with different talents and interests.

Like Stephane said, I do not see how WMCH could take an active part in such an event. How about being on the spot for 3 days and help random visitors crowd-edit wikipedia articles on different exhibits ? Could be interesting, if one of you wants to voluteer, I am sure that WMCH can give you some support...

Best regards,
Stephane

Sure, why not, I will at least go check it out - if it is good we can
then at least help them spread the word.

May we have please a short report about this? Do we have got an answer to our most important questions (1) What are the content which will be made available (2) Which license will be use?

Cheers
Emmanuel
