[MediaWiki-l] autocomplete not working

John Lavalie
After upgrading to 1.33.0, autocomplete on the main search box has stopped
working.  What would cause that?

Re: autocomplete not working

In reply to this post by John Lavalie
This error can happen if MediaWiki does not have permission to read/write
to the tmp directory. By default this is probably /tmp, but you can
override it with $wgTmpDirectory. (The tmp directory can be anywhere, but
it should not be a directory that is web accessible)

Re: autocomplete not working

John Lavalie
Nothing I can think of trying (or ideas found online) has made any difference. I am not defining the tmp directory, so it's the default (although I did try defining it myself directly and got errors). I couldn't see a /tmp folder in the root, so I tried creating one with the proper permissions, and no change. I even tried creating the actual file it seems to be trying to create on the fly, with permissions, and no luck. I found a comment somewhere where it was said that whatever user ran the maintenance scripts was the user that had to have the /tmp rights, so I backed up the entire database and then re-ran the maintenance scripts, and rebooted the server, and no difference.

Why wouldn't MediaWiki have permission to r/w to the /tmp directory? How does one fix that? What alternatives can I try?

BTW, I have another site that was upgraded the same day.  Autocomplete works fine.  The main difference between the sites is that this has Semantic Bundle, the other doesn’t.

Re: autocomplete not working

eQT
I once had a situation where CSS (in MediaWiki:Common.css) was positioning
another element (masthead) at the top of the page, and obscuring (z-index)
the auto-complete text that should have shown in the text box.  It's a
stretch, but if you're not getting any errors, then maybe the text *is
there* but you can't see it.

Re: autocomplete not working

Brian Wolff
In reply to this post by John Lavalie
It would be odd that you don't have a system temporary directory. Note, the
web user would have to be able to read/write the temp directory, not the
maintenance user (Except when doing maintenance work. So really both need
to). Generally the system tmp directory has the permissions 1777 (Everyone
rwx + sticky).

Based on your error message, some possibilities are:
* Your /tmp directory is totally messed up
* /tmp/mw-UIDGenerator-UUID-128 already exists but is owned by a different
user
* Some sort of sandboxing thing is preventing mediawiki from
reading/writing to the tmp directory (like php's open_basedir or SELinux)

When you were messing around with the tmp directories, did the error
message for UIDGenerator (particularly "Warning:
fopen(/tmp/mw-UIDGenerator-UUID-128): failed to open stream: Permission
denied in /home/mwikidb/public_html/includes/utils/UIDGenerator.php on line

Re: autocomplete not working

Thanks to all the suggestions.  Simply adding a $wgTmpDirectory solved the problem.

It's still not working with mobile devices.  Baby steps.

Subject: Re: [MediaWiki-l] autocomplete not working

I once had a situation where CSS (in MediaWiki:Common.css) was positioning
another element (masthead) at the top of the page, and obscuring (z-index)
the auto-complete text that should have shown in the text box.  It's a
stretch, but if you're not getting any errors, then maybe the text *is
there* but you can't see it.
