Memory limit in InitialiseMessages (latest SVN version)

Sylvain Machefert
Hi, I thought I grabbed 1.6.2 from SVN, but when I install it says

"MediaWiki 1.7alpha"

Before the big fatal error, here are a few warnings :
Warning: file_exists(): Unable to access /usr/bin/gdiff3 in
/var/www/.../config/index.php on line 1412
You should add a @ before the file_exists, this will avoid the error
displayed for each diff3/convert tests.

Now is the serious problem.

Environment checked. You can install MediaWiki.
Warning: $wgSecretKey key is insecure, generated with mt_rand(). Consider
changing it manually.

Re: Memory limit in InitialiseMessages (latest SVN version)

Rotem Liss
You've most likely checked out the latest trunk version. Please check
out from
http://svn.wikimedia.org/svnroot/mediawiki/branches/REL1_6/phase3 for
the latest version from the tree REL1_6 or from
http://svn.wikimedia.org/svnroot/mediawiki/tags/REL1_6_2/phase3 for the
version 1.6.2.

As for the error, maybe it's a bug in the latest trunk. Try the branch
or the stable (tagged) version.

Re: Memory limit in InitialiseMessages (latest SVN version)

Sylvain Machefert
OK, now I've switched to branch 1.6, and I've 1.6.2, but I still have the
same big bad error :(

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to
allocate 46 bytes) in /var/www/.../maintenance/InitialiseMessages.inc on
line 146
or 11 bytes in LanguageUtf8.php on line 50.

How can I reduce memory used, using unset when possible... ?

An 8 megabyte memory limit is simply too small, and causes many operations to
fail, such as message initialization. PHP is very wasteful of memory; simply
loading up the code eats up the majority of that 8 megabytes.

Quite simply you will have to raise it. If the installer didn't raise it for
you, it's probably because your PHP is locked down so tight that it can't do it
itself. You'll need to edit php.ini.

Re: Memory limit in InitialiseMessages (latest SVN version)

Sylvain Machefert
I can't edit php.ini, and PHP is locked.
I never had this error before (sometimes a Page not found-like on heavy
pages like RecentChanges).
On the current host I can easily choose PHP4 or PHP5. In the past I tried
without success to go to php5, I'll retry for MW 1.6.2 but I think I'll not
have more memory, and PHP5 is locked as PHP4.

I plan to migrate to a new host more powerful, but I wait they switch from
mysql 4 to 5. While waiting, I must make my current version work.

Re: Memory limit in InitialiseMessages (latest SVN version)

Sylvain Machefert
Tried with php 5, same error but sooner in upgrade process than in php4 :

* Database type: mysql

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to
allocate 8192 bytes) in /var/www/.../languages/Messages.php on line 1

Is it mandatory to load all messages during upgrade ? Or a few queries
(which one ?) I could run via PhpMyAdmin suffice ?
