Shorter URLs without mod_rewrite for 1.5.7?

Colin Donald
Hi,

Could someone please advise on the best method for
creating shorter URLs on 1.5.7 like this without
mod_rewrite?

www.mysite.com/articlename

(Not using a wiki directory)

I've looked at the rewrite rules advice

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Rewrite_rules#Getting_URLs_like_those_on_Wikimedia_sites

and then the non-rewrite methods and the talk for
them, which indicates many previous methods don't work
with 1.5.x

Thanks,

Colin

I strongly recommend against this, as this reserves the entire URL namespace for
the wiki and will break anything trying to load a real file from the server
(such as the many standard or semi-standard locations for robots.txt,
favicon.ico, etc)

At this point you'll have painted yourself into a corner and either have to make
a lot of special exceptions or just have lots of inaccessible things. Bad place
to be.

That seems unlikely; nothing in 1.5 would make this any different from 1.4.
