Updated copyright footer for Commons

Keegan Peterzell-2
Greetings,

The copyright footer that appears at the bottom of all pages on Commons has been modified to introduce CC0 licensing in structured data spaces. The message is MediaWiki:Wikimedia-commons-copyright and the string is available for translation at

This is an important message to identify general copyright obligations on Commons, all help that is available for translations is appreciated.

Thanks for all the work that you do!

Re: Updated copyright footer for Commons

Hi Keegan,

The documentation for the translation unit is confusing. WMF Privacy Policy is on foundation-wiki, and adding Special:MyLanguage to the link is useless:
"foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Privacy_policy/fr" is not a thing. Translations of policies are located on Meta-wiki.
I guess, we can just leave the main link, and those who follow the link to foundation-wiki will find a list of available translations there.

Hi Keegan,

The text to be translated makes mention of a 'property namespace', but I can find no such namespace on Wikimedia Commons. What is this referring to?

Also, it seems to me that when I change the interface language on Commons to anything other than English, the names of the namespaces remain in English (e.g. I cannot find files in the file namespace when I preface a search with 'Bestand:' in Dutch or 'Datei:' in German). Should we translate 'file' and 'property' in 'structured data from the file and property namespaces' regardless, or treat these as names to be left untranslated?

Thanks.

Current plans for structured data pull all properties from Wikidata. However, it might be possible or desired in the future to host Commons-specific properties on Commons, in which case the namespace would need to be created. The wording is added in case this possibility becomes reality. It's slightly unknown at this point, so "better safe than sorry".

Also, it seems to me that when I change the interface language on Commons to anything other than English, the names of the namespaces remain in English (e.g. I cannot find files in the file namespace when I preface a search with 'Bestand:' in Dutch or 'Datei:' in German). Interesting, being an English speaker I never noticed that the namespace prefixes on Commons were configured to English as primary. That's unfortunate.

I'd suggest keeping the namespace prefixes English for now in this case. If there is someone reading this with more knowledge or the situation, or a better idea, please let us know.

Thanks, Vira. Leaving the main link is probably the best way to go for now, we'll look for better solutions in the future.

Don't we have an equivalent to Special:MyLanguage/ for namespaces?

Thank you for the work on this, we're at 20 languages so far [0].

The development team is planning on updating the footer on Commons on Tuesday. Any chance you might have to add a translation for this copyright disclaimer over the weekend would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again, have a great weekend.

Hello Keegan,

Do you also have more information on the decision process that led to this change? I would welcome any link to open discussion, decision process design, actual traces of vote process and results if any happened.

Cheers
