Wikimania 2008 Official Bid - call to arms

Gary Kirk
I wasn't sure if I was "allowed" to make the unofficial bid official bid myself, but seeing as there are two other bids listed officially I thought we should not let it slip us by. :)
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2008/London is not very informative currently. I will try and add to it today - the Cape Town bid[1] has lots of sections and ideas to think about we can use ourselves. [2]

If I read the stuff on Meta correctly, we have nine days to make an official bid into the running, then until the end of September to finalise.

Let's do it people!

[2] *wakes up* Oh, I see they just copied the template. Well, it's useful, whoever worked on that :P)

Yes please! London would be fantastic! :) I live nowhere near it, but anywhere in the UK for Wikimania would of course be excellent :P I'll try and help out too.

Good stuff. I too would love to have Wikimania in London; well as you say England - but if anyone has any alternate towns or cities then, go for it I suppose?

London would be fine for me. I live near Manchester, which would probably be more ideal for me, but London, I think would be more suitable for Wikimania. Also, there's the fact I couldn't really organise anything myself, but would be happy to help out elsewhere.

Gary Kirk
I'm not sure how long the blurb should be. I've written a bit, feel free to add or scrub :)

Someone add something about Wikimedia UK and get clues from the 2007 bid; I'm only going to be available by e-mail for the rest of the afternoon and can't edit.

Count me in for helping out here! I'd love to see Wikimani come to
London - I'm an A/V specialist so I could even run a lot of the
technical stuff that needs doing.

Re: Wikimania 2008 Official Bid - call to arms

Sean Whitton (Xyrael)
Agreed, we should try and get Wikimania in London. It is a pretty good
capital city as they go and I think we could find a place to have it
with plenty of cheap accomodation nearby (what I mean is Travel
Inns/Lodges and the like, which are pretty decent).

Having a chapter which should be pretty well established by then helps too.

Re: Wikimania 2008 Official Bid - call to arms

Gary Kirk
Definitely. Lots of people would be fine in hostels too, it depends on the individual. I will go ahead and try and speak to some people at UCL maybe? As they seemed to be up for it for 2007.

Having a chapter which should be pretty well established by then helps too.

I don't know who dealt with them last year, but here is something I found on their site:[1]
Of course, I am only copying last year's bid venue here, merely to get discussion going...

Re: Wikimania 2008 Official Bid - call to arms

Sean Whitton (Xyrael)
Looks good. I'm afraid I don't know much about how hostels work, but
if we can lower the price like that then great.

Precisely. And there's not a whole lot we can do without a venue.
Hence, I contacted a media relations officer at UCL who didn't know
anything about it but I pointed her to the bit in the 2007 bid where
they say they're keen. Fingers crossed :).

It would appear from the page history [1] that it was Alison W who contacted UCL, or at least it was she who reported it. Possibly she may have more details on who the key people are to talk to.

The running was very close for the 2007 Wikimania. I remember the IRC
session, and the discussion that followed. All available in the
archives.

I guess we need to hear from Wiki Educational Resources Ltd!

I have just had a quick look at this (seems similar to previous years):-

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2008/Official_requirements_for_bidding_cities

Any dates in mind yet?

Any events in London that would clash? Or complement?

Re: Wikimania 2008 Official Bid - call to arms

Gary Kirk
In reply to this post by Gary Kirk
UCL are very keen and I have someone who is willing to act as a go-between between us and them, so to speak. He's too busy to be actually organising anything himself but he can help us. His concern was that as soon as we had something more concrete and a "tighter bid" he would be able to help us more by knowing who to contact and so on. He also felt a big issue was accomodation, I said that people can organise that themselves and stay in their accomodation, and he said he would look in to that and to keep him posted.

Kinds regards

Gary
