[Wikimedia-l] Invitation to a "Wikimedia Café" casual online meetup

Pine W
Hi folks,

Based on comments that I received on Wikimedia-l, I would like to invite
people to a casual online meetup one hour before the monthly WMF Metrics
and Activities Meeting.

There will be no set agenda. You can come with questions or ideas that you
would like to discuss. Please be willing to listen to questions and ideas
from other Wikimedians.

I will host the meeting with the Zoom software. You can join with software
or by using your phone. If you join by phone then your phone number will be
visible to other participants.

The primary language of the meeting will be English, but if people would
like to communicate in diverse languages then that is okay too. We can
facilitate translation by text chat. Many Wikimedians, myself included, are
multilingual in varying degrees, so we might try to have live
interpretation also.

Here is information about how to connect:

Join from PC, Mac, Linux, iOS or Android: https://zoom.us/j/136978210

Or iPhone one-tap :
    Argentina: +543415122188,,136978210#
Or Telephone:
Dial (for higher quality, dial a number based on your current
location):
        Argentina: +54 341 512 2188
        Australia: +61 (0) 2 8015 2088  or +61 (0) 8 7150 1149

        Germany: +49 (0) 30 3080 6188  or +49 (0) 30 5679 5800

    Meeting ID: 136 978 210
    International numbers available: https://zoom.us/u/ekaPibJIy

The first "Wikimedia Café" meetup will be on 30 August 2018, at 17:00 UTC /
10:00 Pacific.

Let me emphasize that the environment won't be like this
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:West_Hartford,_Connecticut_health_care_reform_town_hall_meeting,_2009-09-02.jpg>,
so please don't feel intimated if you are nervous about public speaking.
(If a conversation feels to me like it is becoming uncivil or intimidating,
then I will ask the debaters to quiet themselves or to move to somewhere
else.) The meeting will generally have an environment that is more like this
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Caf%C3%A9_M%C3%A9lange,_Wien.jpg> or
this
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Takamatsu-Castle-Building-Interior-M3488.jpg>.
I anticipate that few people will come, which is okay. I hope that if you
come then you will enjoy the environment and conversation.

Until next time,
Pine

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Invitation to a "Wikimedia Café" casual online meetup

Pine W
Hi folks,

I would like to remind you about this invitation for tomorrow.

I anticipate that there will be few people who attend, and that's okay.

Currently, I am using the free version of Zoom which allows 40 minutes for
meetings, so I will be on Zoom starting at 17:00 UTC for 40 minutes. There
will be a 20 minute break between the end of the Café meetup and the start
of the WMF activities meeting.

If you are concerned about privacy but would like to attend, it's fine to
attend with voice only. The Zoom software allows people to disable their
video.

Example subjects that might come up for discussion include:

* Affiliate activities
* Growth strategies
* Finance
* Community health
* Legal issues
* Structured data on Commons
* "Between the Brackets" podcasts
* Quality and quantity of information on Wikipedia
* Design

There's no pressure to attend if you're not interested or have something
else that is important to do during the Café time tomorrow. This is a
social invitation.

Until next time,

Pine

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Invitation to a "Wikimedia Café" casual online meetup

Pine W
Hi folks,

The first Wikimedia Café  meetup  was surprisingly well attended with four
people. Also, a few people contacted me off list to express interest. So, I
will host another Café meetup next month, again one hour before the
WMF-hosted Wikimedia Activities Meeting. If you're interested in the Café
then please mark your calendars now, because I will send at most one more
reminder before the September meetup.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Invitation to a "Wikimedia Café" casual online meetup

Pine W
Hi folks,

At the Wikimedia Café meetup for September, I would like to have a
roundtable discussion of the 2018 Community Engagement Insights Survey
Report
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Engagement_Insights/2018_Report>.
If you would like to participate in the meetup and have another topic in
mind for discussion, that's fine also. Coming to the Café with no topic in
mind, or primarily to listen, is okay too.

I would like for the Café environment to be casual and low stress for
communication and enjoyment. I will not record the meetup, and I request
that others also not record, although people may take notes. If you are
concerned about privacy then you are welcome to disable your camera and
participate by voice only.

The meetup will start one hour before the WMF/Wikimedia Activities Meeting.
We will probably meet for 30 to 40 minutes. The Zoom connection information
is the same as for the August meetup (see below) except for the date change
to September 27.

If you have questions then you're welcome to email me on-list or off-list.
(If you are waiting for me to reply to an email that's on a different
topic, I am behind on email but I hope to catch up by the end of Wednesday.)

Thanks,

Pine

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Invitation to a "Wikimedia Café" casual online meetup

In reply to this post by Pine W
 Hi folks,

The Wikimedia Café meetup for October will be on October 25. At this meetup
I would like to have a brief discussion about Wikidata's increasingly
prominent role in Wikimedia and in the broader world. If you would like to
participate in the meetup and have another topic in mind for discussion,
that's fine also. Coming to the Café with no topic in mind, or primarily to
listen, is okay too.

As stated previously, I would like for the Café environment to be casual
and low stress for communication and enjoyment. I will not record the
meetup, and I request that others also not record, although people may take
notes. If you are concerned about privacy then you are welcome to disable
your camera and participate by voice only. The meetup will start one hour
before the WMF/Wikimedia Activities Meeting. We will probably meet for 30
to 40 minutes. The Zoom connection information is the same as for the
August meetup (see below) except for the change of date.

If you have questions then you're welcome to email me on-list or off-list.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Invitation to a "Wikimedia Café" casual online meetup

Pine W
In reply to this post by Pine W
Hi,

The next "Wikimedia Café" meetup will be on Wednesday the 23rd of January,
on a time to be chosen via Doodle poll:
https://doodle.com/poll/5mf5cfkuxpprk727. The plan is that for January's
meetup we will focus on Wikidata. Bluerasberry
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bluerasberry>, who works extensively
with Wikidata at the University of Virginia's Data Science Institute, plans
to participate.

The Zoom online meeting link will be the same link that we have used for
previous Wikimedia Café meetups; see below.

The Café meetups are usually small, so they are a good place to ask
questions or to discuss ideas, regarding Wikidata or other Wikimedia topics.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Invitation to a "Wikimedia Café" casual online meetup

Pine W
Hi, the Wikimedia Café for January will be on Wednesday the 23rd at 11 AM
Pacific / 7 PM UTC. The Zoom link is below. Because of the monthly limit
for emails from any one person to Wikimedia-l and my wish to conserve my
remaining emails to that list for other topics, I likely will not send a
reminder about this event, so please mark your calendars now if you want to
attend. Thanks!

Sorry, I started the meeting but the meeting ID number was wrong. I don't
know how that happened. I think that this problem has been corrected, so if
you were trying to connect, please try again.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Invitation to a "Wikimedia Café" casual online meetup

Pine W
In reply to this post by Pine W
 Hi,

For the next Wikimedia Café online meetup we will focus on the subject of
communications in the Wikiverse. What about communications is working well,
what is not working well, and what should be done to improve
communications? This will be a casual discussion but formal proposals may
emerge from it, and at the meetup people are welcome to discuss their ideas
for formal proposals. Participants are also welcome to suggest topics for
discussion other than communications, but the plan is to spend the majority
of the time on the subject of communications.

The Café meetup will be in late March, on a time to be chosen via Doodle
poll: https://doodle.com/poll/t3w8nkt9vy5mm3r5. I am skipping February due
to some existing commitments. When you visit the Doodle poll you should be
able to change the timezone that you see for the calendar. Please be sure
to select the correct timezone for you before you vote.

I will host the meeting using the free version of Zoom. Zoom limits the
length of meetings using the free version to 40 minutes.

The Zoom online meeting link will be the same link that we have used for
previous Wikimedia Café meetups; see below.

If you would like to attend then please vote in the Doodle poll.
