status and roadmap of PageSchemas

Yury Katkov
Hello, my dear community!

Once you've tried Page Schemas you become addicted to it. It's
so convenient!
But I wonder what's the status of Page Schemas? The last version is October
2011, so is that a frozen project? Ankit, Yaron do you plan to improve it
further? Is there any roadmap or approximate plan?

Sincerely yours,
Yury Katkov

Re: status and roadmap of PageSchemas

Yaron Koren-2
Hi Yury,

It's great that you're saying/asking that. I tend to let user feedback
guide the development process, and since there hasn't been that much
feedback about Page Schemas, I just haven't really looked into it since
last year. It's been my hope that it would get more usage, since I agree
that it solves a few problems of having to maintain all the data structure.

There actually is somewhat of a roadmap, though it's more a list of
nice-to-have features than any sort of planned set of actions. Until now
it's basically just been in my head, but I just added it to the Page
Schemas page:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Page_Schemas#Roadmap

I'd be happy to talk in more specific detail about any of these.

Just wanted to add a thumbs up to this too.

I think it's a great extension, although it does have a fairly steep
learning curve.  It would be great to see the roadmap features implemented.

Yaron:

What would be an approximate budget and timeframe for accomplishing the
following things on the roadmap?

   - Allowing Semantic Forms to use the Page Schemas XML directly when
generating a form, instead of requiring a separate form definition.
   - Ability to export/import data structure files in formats such as UML
and SQL to/from the Page Schemas XML format.

Re: status and roadmap of PageSchemas

Yury Katkov
hHi Yaron! Thanks for the roadmap!

The first feature (support more features of the semantic forms) seems the
most valuable. It would be great if one is able to create complex forms
with all possible forms inputs and  features like  show-on-select,
autocompletion, tooltips and miltiple-instance templates!

Re: status and roadmap of PageSchemas

Yaron Koren-2
Hi everyone,

It's great to get this kind of feedback - I really didn't know anyone was
using Page Schemas yet.

Martin - it's not good if Page Schemas is hard to understand at first. If
you have any suggestions on making things clearer in either the interface,
the workflow or the documentation, it would be great to hear them.

Jude - the first one (letting Semantic Forms use the Page Schemas XML
directly) probably wouldn't be that hard to do, thinking about it now - it
might just take a few hours. The second one, of import/export to/from UML
and SQL, could potentially be amazing if it were done, but it would take
quite a bit more time - and I'm not sure if I'm the right person to do it.
I know SQL quite well, but I don't know much about UML - especially not
about their file format internals. Out of curiosity, which combination(s)
of direction (import and export) and data format (SQL, UML, or something
else) would be most helpful to you?

Yury - actually, almost all of the specific SF features you listed are
already settable within Page Schemas - though the interface could be
improved. For any form input, you can set the full group of parameters
(like "values from category=..."), separated by commas. Ideally, though,
instead of having one big input for all the parameters, the interface
should have a separate input for each allowed parameter, based on the
selected input type; the same way that Special:CreateForm does it. (The one
thing in your list that isn't doable is "show on select", because that also
requires setting an ID for the part of the form that's shown or hidden, and
there's no way to do that now.)

Yaron:

I am thinking that one could ask a researcher to send a spreadsheet, UML,
or SQL file (database tables) and convert it into an operational SMW
website to support a research study.
